Kilombo: Places of Memory, Resistance, and Holding Spaces

  • The Betsy-South Beach 1440 Ocean Drive Miami Beach United States (map)

Kilombos: Places of Memory & Resistance and Holding Space iWitness @ The Betsy

Join us for an evening of poetry, music, and images as we reflect on the meaning of Kilombos in Brazil and elsewhere – spaces created by enslaved people fleeing slavery – where contemporary Afro-Brazilians hold space today, despite threats from real estate developers and other outsiders.

We will explore together how Global Black communities—from those in South America to those closer to home here in Miami—continue to occupy places and hold spaces through creativity and will.

We will all hold space together for an evening of song and words as we continue to build toward the future of our diverse and equitable democracy, where every person, every history, and every space can thrive. This is where humanity resides.

Join us with the brilliant Darius Daughtry, Founder of Art Prevails Project, and Matt Sonata, master musician, as we reflect on Maria Daniel Balcazar's art exhibition.

Register through Eventbrite here.
